What is Carolina Kickoff?
As a committee of the Campus Y, Carolina As a dedicated committee within the Campus Y, Carolina Kickoff is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for incoming first-year and transfer students at UNC. Through a dynamic and engaging introduction to campus life, we strive to promote social justice by encouraging meaningful dialogue, celebrating diversity, and cultivating a strong sense of community. Our goal is to ensure that every new student feels empowered to embrace UNC’s open and supportive atmosphere while gaining the knowledge and connections needed to make a positive impact both on campus and beyond.

Ask anyone who has attended Carolina Kickoff, and they’ll tell you—the connections made during camp are meaningful, lasting, and often life-changing. Through shared experiences, late-night conversations, and team-building activities, participants create bonds that extend far beyond the few days spent together. These friendships provide a strong foundation of support, encouragement, and belonging throughout college and beyond. By the time you step onto campus for your first day at UNC, you’ll already recognize dozens of familiar faces, easing the transition into college life and making the university feel like home from the very start.

Whether you choose to attend as a camper, take on a leadership role as a counselor, or stay involved through events held throughout the year, Carolina Kickoff is more than just a summer experience—it’s a lifelong community. The connections you make and the memories you create don’t end when camp does; they continue to grow as you navigate your journey at UNC. From social gatherings to service projects, reunions, and mentorship opportunities, Carolina Kickoff fosters a sense of belonging that extends well beyond your first days on campus, creating a support system that lasts throughout college and beyond.
Details
On the morning of August 13th, we will meet campers at the Campus Y on UNC’s campus and transport them by bus to Camp New Hope, where they will spend the next two nights immersed in an unforgettable experience. As a bonus, those living on campus will have the opportunity to move into their dorms early, making the transition to college even smoother.

From August 12th to 14th, all we ask is that you bring a positive attitude (and practice some basic hygiene—we promise your fellow campers will appreciate it). We’ll take care of everything else. Get ready for high-energy chants, inspiring student performances, engaging guest speakers, fun icebreakers, and, of course, sleep-deprived yet enthusiastic counselors who are just as excited as you are. Most importantly, expect to leave with lifelong friends and a sense of belonging in the UNC community.

To make this experience possible, we ask for a camp fee of $175 per camper, which helps cover transportation, lodging, meals, and activities. However, we are committed to making Carolina Kickoff accessible to every student, regardless of financial circumstances. If cost is a concern, we encourage you to indicate your need for financial aid on your application, and we will do our best to assist you. Our goal is to ensure that every incoming Tar Heel has the opportunity to be part of this incredible experience!
